Spurs’ Tim Duncan on NBA Finals against Heat: ‘We’ll do it this time’

Tim Duncan is anticipating a different outcome in the NBA Finals this year.

After the Spurs outlasted the Thunder 112-107 in overtime in Game 6 on Saturday to win the Western Conference title, Duncan was asked about playing for the championship against the Heat for the second year in a row.

“We have four more [games] to win,” the Spurs’ big man told TNT’s David Aldridge. “We’ll do it this time.”

San Antonio lost to Miami in a classic seven-game series last year. Trailing 3-2, the Heat overcame a five-point deficit in the final 28 seconds of regulation in Game 6 and held on for another home victory in Game 7 to win their second straight title.

The 2014 Finals will mark the first rematch since Michael Jordan’s Bulls defeated the Jazz, led by Karl Malone and John Stockton, in 1997 and ’98.

Duncan is seeking his fifth championship. He led the Spurs to titles in 1999, 2003, ’05 and ’07.

The Spurs will have home-court advantage in the Finals, which will have a 2-2-1-1-1 format after this year’s change from 2-3-2. Game 1 is Thursday in San Antonio.

Hoping for the Spurs to win in the clutch. Go Spurs!

The same people cheering for the Spurs now are the same ones who wanted them to lose when they were the best team in basketball. SMH why is hate more relevant than love? Why cant anyone appreciate greatness?

I would like to see the Spurs shut up and shut down LeBron Lame

Jordan never had to be recruited or recruit/conspire with others to "take their talent" to southbeach, or Chicago to win his championships.  Sure LeBronze has two rings, but in my eyes there will always be asterisks next to those.

Now come the Spurs to stop the Heat-3Peat and cement Duncan's legacy as one of THE best NBA players not just at his position, but of ALL TIME!  With 5 rings Duncan would rank a notch or two below Kobe who is in turn a notch below Jordan.. ;)

And this will teach NBA players let the GMs be the GMs and make decisions who goes where.  If you are talented people will come to you, but oh wait nobody wanted to go to Cleveland with you LeBron, why?

I'm pretty sure the entire nation that isn't currently on the biggest bandwagon in sports is rooting for the Spurs...  Myself included.  No choke job or miracle Ray Allen threes this time.  Get it done!

This will be the best Finals since Cleveland / San Antonio

Both Conference Finals weren't really entertaining, but this Should be the best Finals in a long time. Hopefully we'll have that Celtics vs Lakers vibe going on this series.

If TP is healthy and the league doesn't have a hidden agenda favoring either team, the Spurs will take this in 5.  3 blowouts and 2 close games.

The problem with predictions about sports is that the better team sometimes doesn't win. Just like the better poker player may not win a best-of-7 hands tournament.  Luck plays a big factor.  And health does too.  If Lebum breaks his ankle after game 1, all predictions can be tossed out the window.

The quote from Duncan that I heard was "Hopefully we'll do it this time."  Not quite the same as the headline or the quote in the article, huh?

I rather see the Spurs do it then the Leflop with that big ego do it.

Spurs in 6, just like it nearly was last year, and how Dallas did it.

Tim Duncan:   Don't say it, do it.  I know it's hard in a day and age when "Trash Talk" is seen as displaying "confidence."

This is the way sports should be played. Media hype no, just TRASH TALK. No wonder less people are viewing the sport. It fills the press pages . Forget game stats, shooting percentages, offense or defense moves. The game has changed or just its players ?

It's both hilarious and pathetic that homer fans on both sides are calling each other names and throwing out accusations and false stats to back up why their team will win. Notice neither team is trashing the other? Such is the respect they have for each other. As a Heat supporter, it's a breath of fresh air for us to move past the Pacers and all the side stories, and move on to "just basketball." Looking forward to a great series.

When both teams (this year) play at their best, the Spurs are better. Miami had the best record and home court advantage last year and won (barely). San Antonio had the best record and home court adv this year and will win.

@JIM GAMINO The next time you're at a job that's just not doing it for you anymore, why don't you just sit there and wait for an opportunity to come knocking on your door! If one does, make sure you ask the world if its OK to accept the opportunity! Sounds dumb huh? That's because it is...just like your comment! The league wouldn't have got so upset if he was really "LAME", because who would seek out a "LAME" player.  They were upset because they all thought they had a chance to pick him up, and if they could they would have done the same as MIAMI HEAT without a second thought!  If people would shut up and allow the game to take its course, Miami fans and Lebron James fans wouldn't be so annoyed! He took his talents to South Beach 4 years ago, GET OVER so we can discuss basketball, not about how much you want to bring this guy down for his career choice! GET BACK TO THE GAME......X's and O's!

@Joe R2 Except for HEAT NATION! More than enough 3's this time...consume them with 3's and extra 4's!

@Riverhawk SI title quote did seem out of character for Duncan, most players, for that matter.  One word can make a world of difference.

@hkarls76 What ego? Never misconstrue confidence with ego!  Duncan may have thought his comment was confidence, but on the other hand it can be seen as having an ego.  That would all depend on which team you are fan of...stop the leflop garbage its getting old.  The entire league flops!

@magic mushroom i'll be very impressed if the Heat can take the Spurs in a 7 game series..guys like Ray Allen and Shane haven't really been as productive this playoff season as they have in previous years. This series will really fall on LeBron and Wade. But a 3peat is a huge deal, so i expect both players to go off. Never count out the Spurs tho..they've beaten the more athletic and better teams in the West..all of which the Heat have not faced in the sorry Eastern conference playoffs.

@Marty2 Take it up with a player that trash talks.  This is the most Duncan has spoken since birth.

@Marty2 Trash talk is a form of exhibiting confidence.

@dash2k8 I just couldn't agree more...this Heat-Spurs relationship aren't Heat-Pacers where both teams and personels agreed professionally that they hate each others....Kawhi won't blow any air to LeBron's ear, he respects him as the best player thus would bring his best to contain the beast. We as fans had great games during the 2013 finals, and hope this year the series will bring at least the same, with Spurs thrive as victor this time, :) hopefully. Cheers for both teams and fans, have a great series!

@TruthHurts2 Indiana had a better record too, home court too & the best home win % of any team...how long did that last em? I think the Spurs win this time too...just not due to home court advantage.

dash2k8
dash2k8

@TruthHurts2 That's terrible logic. Miami has consistently proven that regular season records don't mean a thing. If you want to say SA will win, fine, but based on REGULAR SEASON records and stats?

shawng

@TruthHurts2 Miami had a lot going on last year...The Chicago Bears, I meant Bulls tackling them throughout the season and Pacers doing much of the same.  Miami had a day or two to prepare for their first game with the Spurs last year, and still managed to win the championship.  In 2007 Duncan and the Spurs won the title against Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, that year Duncan said the following "This is going to be your league in a while, but I appreciate you giving it to us this year".   http://youtu.be/IGY6UamVRSU

Lebron James took the loss with grace, and five years later as Duncan predicted the league is James's.  Unfortunately, Duncan would not be as graceful as James after the loss.  He was sad and appears to be a little bitter behind the loss, as he declares they "will do it this time". This was not the case with James.  The Spurs are an excellent team, and so is the Miami Heat!  That being said, I wish Lebron James and the Miami Heat a history making series! God Bless!

TruthHurts2
TruthHurts2

That's very funny. Especially since I see no way the Heat can win the series. San Antonio in five or six.

shawng
shawng

@alexholivares1144 That Bandwagon garbage is so LAME and PLAYED! Most of the fans are old MIAMI HEAT fans, and the others are Lebron James fans.  Where James go they follow! All Michael Jordan fans were not Chicago Bulls fans, they were Jordan fans!  I admire Miami Heat primarily because they find a way to excel even when they're hated for NO REASON and most of the time STUPID reasons! It's like trying to excel in your profession and every time you turn around some bitter jealous flawed person tries to bring you down...simply because you have something they want.

@Wando @Marty2 TT is childish arrogance, or a character on the former TV series "Reno 911 ("Halloween ain't no joke!").

@shawng

Duncan is graceful in victory.  Lebum is a scumbag in victory.  Jumping on tables, beating his chest? The guy that walked away without shaking hands after the Celtics beat his as? You're calling THAT guy graceful?

Correction:  Six years later since the season ended 2013!

@TruthHurts2 Yeah, the Heat have lost 3 games in the playoffs this year right? Anyways, should be a good series.

@Nate the Pate @shawng Jumping on tables, beating your chest, crying or screaming after a victory is nothing short of emotions after a game!  You can always spot a BITTER person by the words that proceed out of their mouths! SO UNATTRACTIVE!

@Nate the Pate @shawng Not once did I call Duncan out of his name! It goes to show how "LITTLE CLASS"  a Spurs fan has...NONE! I provided you with proof...where is yours???
